Patients have the right to:
  • Respectful and considerate care
  • Confidentiality of their medical information
  • Informed consent for any medical treatment or procedure
  • Receive a copy of their medical records
  • Refuse treatment
  • Change healthcare providers
  • Access to emergency services
  • Information about the cost of their care
Patients also have responsibilities, including:
  • Providing accurate and complete information about their health history and current health status
  • Following treatment plans and medication regimes as prescribed
  • Asking questions when they do not understand something about their care
  • Being respectful of the healthcare team and other patients
  • Paying for their healthcare services
  • Respecting the property and equipment of the healthcare facility
It is important for patients to understand their rights and responsibilities and to advocate for themselves if they feel that their rights are not being respected.
